## Built for one distribution

Redpanda Console started life as Kowl and is now part of the Redpanda platform. It runs against standard Kafka too, but it's designed and tested around Redpanda: one cluster per instance, Redpanda Connect as the supported path, and Kafka Connect left to the community.

Licensing follows the same logic. The community edition is source-available; RBAC and SSO need a Redpanda Enterprise license priced by quote. There's no ownership model, no self-service with guardrails, no alerting, and no cost attribution.

Conduktor treats Redpanda as one Kafka provider among several. Its free [Community Edition](https://www.conduktor.io/get-started?src=compare-conduktor-vs-redpanda-console) includes SSO and RBAC for 50 users and 3 clusters; paid plans add ownership, chargeback, and unlimited clusters.

Competitor details last checked against Redpanda documentation and licensing pages, September 2026.

## Where Conduktor and Redpanda Console diverge

Four capabilities that decide the evaluation for most platform teams.

- **Every provider, one control plane** — One RBAC model and policy set across Redpanda, Confluent, MSK, and Apache Kafka. Redpanda Console is built for Redpanda.
- **SSO and RBAC in the free tier** — OIDC, LDAP, and resource-scoped permissions in every Conduktor tier. Redpanda gates them behind an Enterprise license.
- **Ownership and self-service** — Catalogs, guardrails, and approval workflows. Redpanda Console manages ACLs, not ownership.
- **Alerts and cost attribution** — Alerts to Slack, Teams, email, and webhooks; spend attributed by team. Neither exists in Redpanda Console.

## Conduktor Console vs Redpanda Console: feature comparison

Conduktor Community Edition is free for up to 50 users and 3 clusters. Where a capability needs a paid plan (Team Edition or Enterprise), the note says so.

- **Conduktor Console** — Redpanda Console
---
- **License & cost** — ⚠ Commercial; free Community Edition (50 users, 3 clusters), paid plans with unlimited clusters. [See pricing →](https://www.conduktor.io/pricing) — ⚠ Source-available under BSL 1.1 since v3; RBAC and SSO need a quote-priced Enterprise license
- **Kafka providers** — ✓ Any Kafka: Redpanda, Confluent, Amazon MSK, Aiven, Apache Kafka — ⚠ Works with Apache Kafka, but designed and tested around Redpanda clusters
- **Redpanda-native administration** — ✗ Console treats Redpanda as Kafka; Redpanda Connect pipelines, cluster configuration, and license management stay in Redpanda tooling — ✓ Built for it
- **Multi-cluster** — ✓ Unlimited clusters from one deployment on paid plans — ✗ One cluster per Console instance
- **Topic & message operations** — ✓ Browse, filter, produce, replay, and reprocess, including from a DLQ; reset offsets with a preview; automatic Avro, Protobuf, and JSON Schema decoding — ✓ Browse and filter messages with JavaScript filters, manage topics and consumer groups, produce
- **Schema Registry** — ✓ Confluent Schema Registry and AWS Glue, with subject ownership through applications — ✓ Redpanda and Confluent-compatible registries
- **Kafka Connect** — ✓ Manage connectors, restart individual tasks, error traces, auto-restart of failed connectors (paid plans) — ⚠ Community-supported; Redpanda Connect is the supported path
- **Authentication** — ✓ OIDC and LDAP in every tier — ⚠ SSO through OIDC requires an Enterprise license
- **RBAC** — ✓ Permissions scoped to topics, consumer groups, subjects, and connectors, managed in the UI, API, or Terraform; group-level RBAC on paid plans — ⚠ Role-based access requires an Enterprise license; ACL management is included
- **Data masking** — ⚠ Field-level masking in Console masks the Console screen (unlimited on paid plans); masking every client needs [Conduktor Gateway](https://www.conduktor.io/gateway) — ⚠ Masks fields on the Console screen only; clients reading Kafka directly see the raw payload
- **Audit log** — ✓ Who did what, when, across every resource; unlimited retention on paid plans — ⚠ Broker-level audit logging is a Redpanda Enterprise feature for Redpanda clusters
- **Monitoring & alerts** — ✓ Cluster, topic, and consumer lag metrics; alerts to Slack, Teams, email, and webhooks; Prometheus integration — ✗ No alerting in Console; metrics through Redpanda's Prometheus endpoints
- **Infrastructure insights** — ✓ Health score per cluster, partition skew, stale topics, under-replication risk, data quality rules — ✗ Not available
- **Ownership & self-service** — ✓ Application and topic catalogs, guardrails, approval workflows (paid plans) — ✗ Not available
- **Terraform** — ✓ [Official provider](https://registry.terraform.io/providers/conduktor/conduktor/latest) for Console resources — ⚠ Redpanda's provider targets Redpanda Cloud resources; Console itself is configured by YAML
- **Chargeback** — ✓ Cost attribution by topic, application, and cluster (paid plans) — ✗ Not available
- **Wire-level security** — ⚠ Encryption, masking, and virtual clusters through [Conduktor Gateway](https://www.conduktor.io/gateway), in front of Redpanda or any Kafka; a separate proxy to deploy — ✗ Not applicable
- **AI assistance** — ✓ [MCP server](https://www.conduktor.io/mcp) inside Console, read-only and scoped to each user's RBAC — ⚠ Redpanda offers an MCP server through rpk, oriented to Redpanda Cloud

Multi-vendor governance
Redpanda alongside everything else, under one set of rules
Most estates that adopt Redpanda keep other Kafka providers running alongside it. Console applies one RBAC model, one policy set, one catalog, and one alerting configuration across all of them, so the platform team governs an estate rather than a distribution.

Access control
SSO and RBAC that come with the free tier
OIDC and LDAP login and resource-scoped permissions are in Conduktor Community Edition, and group-level RBAC arrives with the paid plans. Redpanda Console puts SSO and RBAC behind a quote-priced Enterprise license, which limits the free tier to a single trusted team.

## Which should you choose?

- **Redpanda Console fits if...** — Your estate is Redpanda end to end, you use Redpanda Connect rather than Kafka Connect, and you either need no RBAC and SSO or already hold a Redpanda Enterprise license.
- **Conduktor fits if...** — Redpanda is one of several Kafka providers you run, you depend on Kafka Connect, several teams need ownership, self-service, and approval workflows, you want alerting and cost attribution, or you need SSO and RBAC without an enterprise license negotiation.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does Conduktor work with Redpanda?**

Yes. Console connects to Redpanda as a Kafka-compatible cluster, including its Schema Registry, and Conduktor Gateway can sit in front of Redpanda brokers for encryption, masking, and virtual clusters.

**Is Redpanda Console free?**

The community edition is free for internal use under BSL 1.1. RBAC and SSO require a Redpanda Enterprise license, available on a 30-day trial and then priced by quote.

**Does Redpanda Console work with Apache Kafka or Confluent clusters?**

It can connect to Kafka-compatible clusters, but it is designed and tested around Redpanda, and Kafka Connect support is community-maintained. For a mixed estate, Console gives you one governance model across every provider.

**Can we use Conduktor with Redpanda Connect?**

Console manages Kafka Connect clusters and connectors. Redpanda Connect pipelines are managed through Redpanda's tooling; Console still sees and governs the topics they produce to and consume from.

**How hard is it to move from Redpanda Console to Conduktor?**

There's no data migration. Console connects to the same clusters and registries. ACLs stay on the brokers; Console permissions and policies are defined on top, usually through the Terraform provider.
